International Lighthouse day 17.08.08 Sälgrund

Yesterday was the international lighthouse day and I visited Sälgrund lighthouse in Kaskö. They had open day for public and during the day more than 700 people visited. To get there first had to drive Kaskö's fish harbour and from there with a small boats (7-15 persons) to Sälgrund.

Due the public interest they ran out of the fish soup that I was dreaming to taste but luckily there was left salmon bakes and pancakes. :) The day was excellent, weather was perfect to take photographs and it didn't rain.

Finnish television (subtv, R&A festival films) surprised me by broadcasting such of beautiful movie 2046. Through the film I floated through slow scenery of emotional landscape with determined sadness (with some help of Parma ham and Papagello vanilla icecream).
The slowness of storytelling was hypnotic and it carried me 129 minutes till I was again present in this reality with satisfied smile with a slightly wet eyes.

It was stimulating to see Russian Experimental Videos and films last weekend. It was curated by Masha Godovannaya, which film was screened too [Masha Godovannaya: Another Place and Yet the Same (2005, 35’)].

She was telling her views of film making, part of her philosophy is that the films don't have to please the audience or others, on contrary, the film maker is doing the film for her or himself.

Sometimes, when I am doing experimental videos I start thinking in some point that how it will be received by others, how it looks for them and will they get what I am trying to say or do they get same ambient out of it..

It is vital to remember to be honest for yourself when doing experimental video, let not the expectations of outside world ruin the proses.

I went to see two programs in this festival: "AVANTOSCOPE 2007 (curated by visual artist Sami van Ingen)" and "Stekliannoe pole — Russian Experimental Films and Videos from 2001 to 2007". The Russian program was really interesting due the fact that the history of making experimental films is relatively short and, therefore, it was feeling somehow so raw and energetic.

During this festival weekend I saw absolutely fantastic Finnish electro band ORGAN, which has released they first and last album in year 1982 Nekrofiilis (Poko). They sounded fantastic, somewhere between Kraftwerk and Icelandic Apparat Organ Quartet, spiced up with ZZtop look, 4 men standing on stage with their brand new Macs and old machines.

The festival weekend was nice and it gave loads of new ideas and energy, Takk!!!!

This is my result: In a forest you might find a three where the knowledge of good and bad is living, apparently, inside an apple. And, of course, there is a serpent which is speaking (quite rare phenomenon) and trying to convince Adam and Eve to eat the apple... well.. this is quite far fetched this time ;)

Virginia # 42, 2004

Sally Mann's exhibition at Tennis Palace Art Museum was exiting experience. It was composed with tree series; Immediate Family, Deep South and What Remains. The first shocked in states, which is not surprising considering the demonising of nudity and especially nude children images amongst conservative circles.

This made me think about people in my pictures, I would like to have models to make directed pictures, occasionally, exploring the nudity as well. But I have opposition against nude pictures by my better half so lets see when and how it is possible. ;)

What Remains was nicely disturbing with the touch of the rotten bodies. Seeing the pictures triggered the sense of smell of something not so pleasant, even thou, there wasn't any odour.

Sally Mann is using old fashion photo techniques and her pictures have a dreamlike tone where all the mistakes of developping the images makes the pictures as whole.

This exhibition was encouraging me continue to work with film, at least, keeping the film's uncertainty as part of my experimental photography.

These stairs are from Galleria Spectra, Kristinestad, Finland. The attic of this gallery is huge and there is one room with okay floor and fire place. I got an idea last summer when I was participating an exhibition of local art society, this attic should be used for some kind of ghost or spooky room for children where they could do art and drawings when downstairs is the art society's own exhibition... have to talk with the head of society..

This week's topic "stairs" remided me a town in Kent, Great Britain, where I lived 1 month when I was 15 years old. It's called Broadstairs. But I don't have now any pictures of the town so.....

This picture is from Anomabu beach, Ghana. People are using the beach as a toilet, so when walking one have to keep eye on human shit if not wanting to step on it. The village council has tried to force people to pay for cheap toilet (substituted by government) but they claim that the smell is too bad that they prefer to do their thing at the beach instead..

From starting place + 47 Celsius to -3 Celsius, means that I got back from Ghana after travelling close to 20 hours. It is nice to be back in cold climate but the returning came just when my body finally started to take the intense heat. So it is amazing how bodies can change or adapt. The culture shock when coming back to Finland was that here is no people, the streets were empty and none will come to try sell something to you or trying to be your best friend for money..

I have taken incredible amount of pictures, close to 1500 , so I will put up some kind of exhibition out of the best pictures and edit a small video from the 10 hours of video material what I took...

Now is the time to start thinking again the normal life and open bills that the postman has been dropping in through the letter box...

Going to Ghana! Africa calling

In few hours my Nordic presence will change to be more closer of equator, on the other words, I am going to Ghana in west Africa. The aim of the trip is to build a church with enthusiastic group of church builders from Finland. The group's strength is 21.
So, next two weeks will be full of photo shooting, layering brigs, plasting and using a video camera, not forgetting swimming and safaris.....

Okay, now I have broke my long lasting love relationship with film by buying a digital camera (canon eos 30D). Anyhow, it is not the most advanced and professional but probably good for my usage.

The reason for this, or the tricker was the forthcoming Africa trip. I started to calculate how much slide film I would have to buy and how much the development would cost.

Anyway, I will take a lomo camera with me to just get the film feeling! ;)

The New Old Country / Moving back to my Mother's land

It was more or less 9 years since I lived last time in my mother's land. Now I am back and it is interesting to see how much it has changed. Most of the things are positive, thou. :)

I'd managed to get an apartment from the centre of Helsinki, small but characteristic with sea view. It is quite expensive (rent), but not so much than in Reykjavik. Only problem is that I don't have much furniture due the fact that I have been mobile in my living habits and haven't invested any pesetas for decorative things and now I am eager to find some cool furniture, for example, I just found a fantastic sofa, which only costs 770 €... ( i am having internal fight between my id and alter ego to buy it or not)

Anyway, Helsinki and Finland has welcomed me and my beautiful half to enjoy this wonderland.. - and hey, Finland has four seasons, beautiful white winter, warm summer, blooming spring and melancholic autumn, aahh, my camera just waits to get out and take pictures.... heee...

The challenge of this week was to shoot a picture at 11pm sharp 1st of September, where every you physically were. So I was in a smoke sauna having a morning swett. - The smoke sauna keeps the heat for long time, for example, if it has been heated up previous day then you can still enjoy really comfortable time in next morning... (this time I didn't go swim at the sea after sauna.... the water is getting colder)

EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art

Last sunday I visited EMMA - @ WeeGee house. I bought a ticket and placed the entrance sticker on my shirt before going to toilet.

When I was going to enter the exhibition area I noticed that the sticker was gone. I went back to toilet to find it and also I check the route that i walked with no luck, darn...

Luckily, the lady at the desk who sold the ticket gave me a new sticker when I said that: I went to toilet I just couldn't find it anymore, - it disappeared as a fart into the sahara...... whatta mystery!!!!?

The museum's base collection "The Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection" was excellent. I could imagine what has been going around the collector's head when buying the art, really interesting pieces!!!

The reason why I desided to go there was an exhibition "Moving Potraits" by three female video / media artists; Salla Tykkä, A K Dolven and Eija-Liisa Ahtila. It was the last day of the exhibition.

Later that same day's evening, after all, I found the lost sticker when I went to toilet and pulled down my pants I found the sticker attached on my left leg. How it ended up there? don't know... it wouldn't cross my mind to search it from there, thou. ;)

Today I feel really summerish, humid nice air just after thunder rain, thermometer is rising near 29 celsius, enjoying the heat, couldn't get better.
I have always linked summer and kids together. When I think about summer I normally remember my childhood summer flashes in my mind.

Yesterday I travelled from Iceland to Finland and, of course, I killed time by taking some photos when the clouds weren't shading the land and the sea.

The Baltic sea is getting greener. I don't mean that it is getting nature protection way greener, vice versa, this blue seaweed (blue-green alga Nodularia spumigena) is a sing of bad health status that it has... doesn't look too good.

Kick the habit .. hobbit / smoke ban

The first of June Iceland and Finland alongside many other countries stepped in to smoke free coffee and restaurant culture.
Due this enforced new law I decided to gig my smoking habit from the same day when the law started.

I have been smoking more or less 18 years now and I haven't really tried to stop during these years but now I decided to give a go. When I am writing this, it is already 4th smoke free days.

Day 1: graving level 10, irritation level 9, tickling sensations around body . Action: A long walk by the sea and photographing landing airplanes in storm with Holga camera, multible exposure. Loads of vine at nite.

Day 2: graving level 9,5, irritation level 10, joints are aching, feels like worms are travelling around under my skin. Action: A long walk 6 - 8 km with cameras, Movies: Spiderman 3 [shait movie, do not watch, thanks for H&H for free tickets], bars and beer.

Day 3 graving level 7, irritation level 6, my feet are tickling and I have decided to go for foot massage as soon as possible. Action: "movies 28 weeks", brilliant movie!, buying whale meat (smoked and frozen), enjoying Fishermen's days activities at Reykjavik's harbour.

Day 4 (morning) graving level 5, irritation level 4... - so it's getting better!! :)

I'd decided to take it day by day, so I am already winner 'cos 3 whole days without smoking. Hmm.. well, this has a side effect, I have started to drink loads of red vine to forget the cigarette graving... Anyhow, I am pleased of this experience so far and I feel that my body loves it too.. (but still I would love to have one smoke some day...... hee...)

Confused Oliver and problematic relation with flowers and himself. - for Oliver the obsession of flowers reflects his immaturity.... one day he will be seduced by flowery fragrance...

(this challenge was really hard, first i was thinking to put pic with no flowers what so ever, but that didn't feel right, then I decided to find a flower pic from my archive with bad result: I only have 2 flower pics, which aren't any special.. so this picture refers more to the feeling of the text by Jean Hanff Korelitz)

ps. if you wonder what is this Valokuvatorstai challenge thing. It is a Finnish blog, which have a weekly picture challenge with various topics, and not so easy sometimes ;)

Smoking Station - Arlanda Airport - Terminal 2

A brand new smoking station at Arlanda airport. I had a priviledge to test it and it was unpractical experience. The smoke didn't really stay inside the station and 4 people smoking same time was too many, the ashtray was disfunctional by previous users that did not know how to dispose the cigarette endings.
However, this smoking station is improvement, before people weren't able to smoke at terminal 2 at all.
- the smoking is not good for health and I advice all smokers to kick the habbit.. ;)

I was one evening making some boxes at my friend's workplace and the boss showed up. He was bringing goods in and, of course, I asked: "Do you need a hand?", I'd noticed that he only has one hand but the question just slipped out from my mouth, heee..
I think this was really funny, It was almost impossible to keep strait face. Soon he was gone and we were having a good laughter!! ;)

Lomo camera is handy camera, it goes nicely in your pocket, and it is easy to use, on the other words, it doesn't have too many functions to choose.
It is quite similar camera than Holga and it gives same feeling.

Holga 120 CFN

I have been mainly using film cameras so far and to keep the interest for old fashion photography I bought Holga 120 CFN camera, middle format 120mm. It is really basic, but unpredictable, it has its own will or mind. - You never know if there is a light leek or some other thing... that makes it really exciting to use.. :)

It will take some time to find right ISO films to use and to get familiar with it. If you gonna go for Holga, you should purhace the camera with a starter kit with some gadgets and introduction book.

Recently I found this brilliant song by Helsinki Complaints Choir, which presents finnishness well.
In Finland, people are constantly complaining about everything as like it would be programmed into they heads, (summer is too hot, winter is too cold...) even thou they aren't meaning to be too pessimistic, it is kind of habit.....
It is every one's own choice to complain or not, and also, one can choose one's company... - I rather spend my time with positive people.. ;)

Ah well, by writing about complaining Finns that I dislike, I am basically complaining....... heh!
- so that means that I am after all typical finnnn (complaining about complaining)..

I wish positive day for Everyone!!!
